June 21, 2009: Study on the migration routes of the Sábalo
A few months ago the LAMPI Foundation was approached by the Argentine scientist Baygún to whether our
organization was interested to participate in a research project with the aim of collecting data on the movements of
certain species in the Pilcomayo. Despite the importance of Sábalo (
Prochilodus lineatus) as a source of food and
income for the fishing communities along the Pilcomayo, little is known about the migration behavior of this
species. To get answers to questions like: Where does the fish caught here are exactly come from? "To what height
do they migrate up the river?
August 6th, 2009: LAMPI Needs your help 'for the world of tomorrow'.
As a reader of our website you are probably aware of the fact that the LAMPI foundation has a strong aim to improve
the environment and education in Bolivia. At this time we are participating in a game with which we can win a nice
sum of money to use for a educatieproject that we soon hope to be able to perform. The mission of the game is
simple: the project with the most votes wins the contest and its prize money, an amount with which we can do very
much here in Bolivia. For us to win this game, we need your help! What we ask you is 5 minutes of your time to vote
via the Internet on our project. The process is very easy by following these steps:

1. Visit the website for the World of Tomorrow on the following
link

2. Click in the top right corner on the icon to join. Now fill in your name, password and your e-mail address
and check the box I agree with the general conditions. Then click on Register me! (as long as you don’t select
the other box with the newsletter you won’t get any annoying emails). In the inbox of your e-mail, you’ll find
a message that confirms that you indeed have signed up.

3. Now go to the project Opportunities for Education and Environment in Bolivia on the following
link,sign in
with your name and password and make your choice by pressing the voting icon bar.

That was all! Within five minutes of your time you have contributed to increasing the ability to realize this great
initiative. If you like us to help more than you can do that by telling your contacts / friends / family and colleagues
about this initiative and to call them to vote! We of course keep you informed through our website.

We thank you so much for your help!
August 14th 2009: LAMPI plunges into the top 10 at 'for the world of tomorrow'.
In the first week that our project chances for education and environment in Bolivia
entered the '
for the world of tomorrow' competition the project of the LAMPI
foundation managed to get up to 240 votes. This was enough to plunge into the top
10 and seize a strong hold on the sixth place. At the time of this writing we have
already achieved many new votes and we are actually on a steady 4th place and
still climbing. This broad introduction in this first week did already pay off, we won
the week price of 100 euro's. But don't stop, we are still not finished: The
competition lasts until October 2009 and many new projects can be added daily.
The allround winners won't be selected untill october. For this reason we still need
your help. We have designed a poster which you can print out and put up at your
sports club or social association. Make sure all your friends and family will vote for
our project and let them ask their friends. More information about how to vote, can
be found in the news topic down below (August 6th).
For more information about the project the funding is going to be used for, feel free
Print out this poster and put it up at
your sports and social clubs and make
sure all your friends will vote too.
August 25th of 2009: Arrival of a new Friend
Last Monday, after a journey of close to 24 hours, 4 different flights and a long bus
journey, Sierra Geraci, an North-American archeologist / ecologist arrived at the office of
the LAMPI Foundation in Villa Montes. Coming from New Mexico in the United States,
and spending a lot of time working in the hot desert sun there, the South Bolivian
temperatures don't seem to be too uncomfortable for her. The next 6 months Sierra will
be working for LAMPI, mainly as a research assistant, working with us on the various
studies that we'll be executing in the next several months. According to her own words
Sierras first impressions of the area and her new working environment are positive,
let's keep it that way.
Sierra, welcome to the crew!
Where do they spawn their eggs? it is necessary to follow this fish somehow. To
enable this project Dr. Baygún decided to mark a large number of fish with a
visible code. A small team consisting of three enthusiasts from the LAMPI
foundation began marking the first 1000 fish since
last week. With a surgical needle a small plastic tube is affixed just below the
dorsal fin of the fish. This tube contains a unique code of the fish and the details
of the locations where the catch of a fish with a marker can be reported.

September 12th : My  First Impressions (by Sierra Geraci)
As I got off the bus in Villa Montes, I immediately felt relaxed and at ease.  In comparrison to the many other places I
passed through on my long journey here, Villa Montes felt the most safe and friendly and I was not surprised when
the taxi driver told me that there was very little crime here.
The research here at LAMPI is amongst the highest quality that I
have seen in ten years of doing research.  The team here has a
strong relationship with the native fishing communities and a solid
network of cooperation with other environmental organizations in the
Chaco region (which includes Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay).  I
came here to work in aquatic ecology with the studies of heavy metal
contamination in the Pilcomayo River.   Since I also have a
background in Anthropology, I tend to closely examine the impacts of
a research project on the native people who compose the
surrounding community.  In their research on the Pilcomayo, LAMPI
is working with the native tribes (Weenhayek and Guaraní) to gather
their data on the fish directly from the native fishermen as they are
bringing them out of the river and preparing them for market.
This research method has a very small impact on the fish, the river and the native fishing community.  I look forward
to returning again and again.
September 11th 2009: The LAMPI Foundation wins again!
LAMPIs second attempt to win the weekly price at the voordewereldvanmorgen.nl contest was successful once
again! This time we won a price of EU 999,= for our Pablo Pila project. The money will be spent on transport of the
batteries, informational spots on radio and TV, prices for contesters and improvement of the containers.
A big thanks to all voters!!!!!
November 25th: LAMPI Summer Holidays
While in the Netherlands the woods floor is littered with a mosaic of yellow, brown and red, on the other side of the
equator young shoots are just starting to sprout. While the mercury regularly reaches the forty-degree border, dark
clouds gather and tree frogs, crickets and cicadas are bringing their nightly serenades.
Like in the Netherlands, also here in Bolivia business during the warmest time of year is at a lower level. For the
LAMPI foundation this means that the office in Villa Montes during this period will be closed for the most time and that
many activities during this period will be temporarily paused.
This does not mean that nothing will happen during this period,: last years projects are analyzed and the results will
be incorporated in a report. Also, the results of the financial year 2009 will be processed. Furthermore, this period of
temporary peace will be used to redirect the LAMPI compass: where do we go next year and how are we going to
better organize our expanding foundation in the future? In the new year we hope to make a fresh start.
