The LAMPI Foundation
The Foundation Los Amigos del Pilcomayo (friends of the Pilcomayo) is a
Dutch-Bolivian organization dedicated to the sustainable protection of the South
American Pilcomayo river. The Pilcomayo river (Quechua: river of many birds) is
the largest river in South Bolivia and an important tributary to the larger Río de la
Plata, which after the Amazon is the largest river system in South-America. Up to
now the Pilcomayo harbours a great diversity of plant and animal species, a lot of
which are endemic to the region. Except of great ecological importance the
Pilcomayo is also of great social, historical, economical and cultural importance
for the people who inhabit its shores. Therefore it is important that also future
generations can enjoy the many resources this beautiful river has to offer and that
its protection is supported by the entire population.
Our Mission
LAMPI works hard on the development of broad societal support for the and amplification of possibilities for this protection and on
the development of (technical) solutions for existing environmental problems. The third part of our mission is being an important
information centre on the Pilcomayo.
More information about our goals can be found through our library, the Pilcotheek
Strategy
Research and education are our two most important tools to realize our mission. Research is
ecosystem, and of the factors that might endanger its value. Education is developed to
spread this knowledge. Thereby, we hope to create and increase awareness of the
importance of the river and increase the chances for sustainable protection of the Pilcomayo.
LAMPI works mainly with volunteers and trainees in order to involve them, through their work,
with the river.
Our Team
LAMPI is a foundation and therefor has a running committee. This committee has five
members, of which one lives in Bolivia and four live in the Netherlands. The Foundation
committee is put together as followed:
Chairman: MSc. Max van de Ven
Secretary: MSc. Marjolein Glashouwer
Treasurer: BSc. Niek Lamers
General Member: MSC. Marinke Stassen (tevens onderzoekscoördinator)
General Member: Dr. Alfons Smolders (tevens weteschappelijk adviseur)
In addition to these board members the foundation may rely on a large amount of
volunteers and students with different backgrounds and nationalities. Finally, the LAMPI
foundation in Bolivia regularly contracts local people. Click here for a complete list of all
employees.
History
Since the mid 1990´s researchers and students from the Dutch Radboud University came
to South America to study the river Pilcomayo. Their research focused on the biology of the
Pilcomayo ecosystem and on its environmental issues.
Centuries of mining activities in the upper slopes of the Pilcomayo near the town of Potosí
(Bolivia) lead to the fact that concentrations of many metals in the water and sediment of
the Pilcomayo are clearly elevated above natural background levels. In particular the
elevated presence of heavy metals in the environment implicates certain health risks for
all life connected with the river.
In the summer of 2004 two former students of the Radboud University decided to go back
to Bolivia once more to amplify the research on this subject and to implement research
results in practical solutions and recommendations. To give their work a permanent
status and to simplify fund raising, the foundation "Los Amigos del Pilcomayo" (LAMPI)
was founded in July 2006.
In February 2008 for the first time in its existence, LAMPI was able to contract two
professional employees. Furthermore, around the same time, for the first time two
volunteers were contracted. With these new forces LAMPI now is growing out to a
professional organisation able to execute more projects to help us achieve our goals.
