The population of this project concerns the fishermen near the town of Villamontes and is called: Salud Ambiental Weenhayek.
This projects aims on the communication of the results of former research we executed in these villages in 2005 and 2006 and
on improving the existing poor health situation of the families.
Former results show that the health situation in these villages is still poor. Besides the poor quality of water sources and the
poor hygienic conditions, research results show that the people in these communities are exposed to elevated health risks due
to their high consumption of only slightly contaminated fish and more severe contaminated intestines and bones.
The general idea of the project is to form internal health committees in which men and women from these communities
discuss topics like "What is clean water and why is it important?" and "What is healthy food and what can I do to improve the
quality of my diet?".

Weenhayek Health Counceling
Education project Environment & Health
The most important objective of this project, that we have started last February, is sharing information we have about subjects
related to the environment and health with the people that live near the river Pilcomayo and its surroundings. Every group we
work with assists in about ten sessions and the exact content of the sessions we adjust to the needs of each group.
It is not always that easy to execute a project in the way you’ve planned. We had planned to work with women and children from
the Weenhayek people. However, in spite of various intents to start the project in these communities, it resulted to be very
difficult: in April it was impossible to start, because the people all went to live near the river because of the fishing season, and
then in September when most people returned to their villages, the village captains rejected the project. The major reasons for
them to reject the project were that they have fear of the subject ´contamination´ and the fact that the project contains elements
of the emancipations of women.

Because of these deceptions we have decided to change the strategy of the project a bit: we no longer look for participants in
the Weenhayek communities, but also we made new contacts with other communities along the river like the Tapieti and
Guaraní.

The first experiences with these new groups have resulted to be very positive and the first participants have finished the
sessions. According to a Bolivian costum during an official meeting we have handed over certificats of participation.

Meanwhile Inés and Claudia have been working with the first groups of women and in some communities also the men are
interested to participate. Each group has different needs and we are very proud of the labour and flexibility that show Inés y
Claudia during the work the perform.
