The Foundation Los Amigos del Pilcomayo (friends of the
Pilcomayo) is a Dutch-Bolivian organization dedicated to the
sustainable protection of the South American Pilcomayo river
and of all life depending on it, including the human population.
The Pilcomayo River
The South American Pilcomayo river, a tribute to the La Plata system, starts its
course in the Andean highlands of Bolivia. From here it follows its course
southeast. It leaves the highlands some 650 km further downstream near the
town of Villamontes. Crossing the Gran Chaco it eventually forms the border
between Argentina and Paraguay. The Pilcomayo harbours a unique array of
wildlife and is famous for its fish. As well a source for food as for water, the
Pilcomayo plays an important role in the lives of the many people who inhabit its
shores. Read more about the Pilcomayo river here.

Since 2005 LAMPI, in co-operation with the Radboud
University, is executing a continuous monitoring on the
quality of the different environmental compounds, like
water, sediment and fishes, with a special focus on the
concentrations of heavy metals. For more details on

Ecological Research
During its existence LAMPI has executed varies studies
focusing on different ecological aspects of the
Pilcomayo river. One of our ongoing quests is to gather
a museum collection of the different fish species that
inhabit the Pilcomayo river. We also collect information
about the ecology and biological properties of the
population of Sábalo (Prochilodus lineatus), which,
because of it's ecological, economic and nutritional
value, is the most important fish species in the
Pilcomayo river. For more info on this topic click here.
LAMPI is working on a teaching package for high
schools in Villa Montes. The package consists of a
combination of theoretical and practical classes on
ecological and environmental issues of the Pilcomayo
river. A first pilot of the project has started in
September at the high school "Julio Crevaux". more....

A Pilcomayo book
LAMPI is a centre of knowledge about
the river in and around Villa Montes. A
project that is running at this moment,
is to write a book to transmit this
knowledge to the local people. The
book will give a complete picture of
the economical, ecological and social
aspects of the river. Subjects like
biodiversity, indigenous people and
environmental problems will be addressed. If you're
interested in contribute to this project, please mail
